You Can’t Steal My Joy – Ezra Collective

Harry

Having really enjoyed their EP, Juan Pablo, I was excited to see how Ezra Collective would fare on a full length project. For The most part, I really enjoyed the album. Clearly an immensely talented group of blokes, each member displaying their talent at some point throughout. The beats were infectious and varied in their styles and influences. The major factor holding me back from really loving this album was the sustained tempo. Initially I was impressed by the cohesion of the album by the slick changeover between the first and second track. However, midway through I wanted a moment that was perhaps distinctly softer or that kicked up the intensity. These moments did come, notably in Philosopher II. But could have had a few more. Overall solid but was hoping for a bit more variety.

Ezra Collective are the face of the internationally recognised upcoming jazz scene in London, ignited by the organisation ‘Tomorrow’s Warriors’ and have experienced some amazing opportunities as a result. Having released 2 shorter projects, YCSMJ is their first stab at a full-length album. Upon first listen, there is a lot to like about this album, Extra have stayed very true to their musical roots, as this exciting, rhythm-driven style of music associated with the current London Jazz Scene can be found throughout the album. It is nice that they acknowledge their Hip-Hop influences in some of the tracks, however I feel that the album is calling out for a musical progression, something I believe Ezra are capable of, but haven’t demonstrated on this album. Furthermore, 53 mins is quite long and some more FIRE features may have brought something different to the project. However, Ezra’s sense of groove and rhythm throughout is exception, and this creates a very pleasant listening experience.
