Sci Fi 1 – Dijon (EP)
Harry
I was drawn to Dijon for his blend of Frank Ocean and Kevin Abstract. I also thought it would be interesting to see how he faired when within a collection of albums such as this (filled with many high profile artists). For an artist with just a few singles and even fewer breaching 1 million plays, Dijon does himself justice. Dijon brings a more minimalist approach compared to my expectations, opting for just a guitar to accompany his voice on a couple of tracks. The textures he brings to the table are impressive and keep the songs varied. Unfortunately, I felt his voice is what let the EP down. The nasal delivery sounded more whiney than emotive and there were few catchy lyrics to give me much purchase. Despite this, I did very much enjoy the listen and I look forward to hearing him sculpt out a more distinctive sound for himself in the future.

Knowing absolutely nothing about Dijon or his previous work, I approached this EP with an incredibly open mind. Our first EP review, the short 17 mins presented a complete unknown. What a titillating prospect! Within the first couple of tracks, Dijon’s sound became very clear, characterised by a tasteful use of acoustic instruments (most notably guitar) and backing vocals, sandwiched by a sparse use of electronic beats. With interesting musical material, particularly chords heavily influenced by jazz and neo-soul, I enjoyed this EP a lot. However, I think the track Bracelet did not feel like it belonged on the EP at all, and was extremely uncharacteristic and stuck out like a sore thumb. I think this track let the EP down slightly, as on a project this small there isn’t really space to be too contrasting. The fact remains however, an enjoyable listen and I look forward to hearing more from Dijon in the future.
