Writing the follow-up to ‘4eva is a Mighty Long Time’ must have been an incredibly difficult task. It was an album that didn’t make a single sonic miss-step and, perhaps more importantly, it was lyrically and conceptually impeccable. The first track from this new release, whilst very much enjoyable, didn’t seem to give many hints away as to the direction KRIT would be going.
The album begins with some big trunk-knockers in classic KRIT style. However, they don’t hit particularly hard and feel this is subsequently the weakest part of the album. ‘I been waiting’ and ‘I made’ sound like stale trap beats that could have been taken off Scorpion.
The second half of the album picks up significantly though even if the song ‘Outer Space’ does it’s best to ruin it (seriously, what was he thinking?). Though not at his best, KRIT’s delivery is brilliant and captivating. His trademark style does it’s best to bring together the vast genres he spans on this project. However, this is by no means a perfect album and, following from such a remarkable album, it was rather disappointing.
Most notable, I feel like KRIT’s pen game was very flat and doesn’t address any new ideas beyond the stereotypical braggadocios rap persona which he so frequently subverts and plays with in a far more interesting way. I would have liked to have heard more organic instrumentation, which may have been able to bring out some more interesting lyrics. Furthermore, the trap influences that are dotted throughout the album really hold it back.
When KRIT WUZ HERE came out in 2010, it was a clear statement about the growing recognition he was receiving. “Don’t blink or you’ll miss me” he said to the listener. KRIT IZ HERE, a more mature title, demonstrates the contentment he feels for his place in the world – something he has struggled with and aired out beautifully in 4eva. However, this has manifested itself in an album that feels too comfortable and, frankly, unambitious. KRIT might be here right now, but I do hope he finds somewhere else to go.
