Hollywood’s Bleeding – Post Malone

Harry

When Posty took the world by storm with ‘Beerbongs & Bentleys’, I was thrust into a place of confusion and mental conflict. On the one hand, Posty’s pen game was consistently dreadful, with my favourite of his lyrics being:

“The I spotted lil’ mama through the wall of jabronis (Ooh) / Point her out so I can bag her if they just bring her to me (bring her to me) / I ain’t even seen the face, but she got beautiful boobies (wow)”

On the other hand, the production was quality and the beats were sharp. On top of this, Posty delivered some of the stickiest chorus melodies of 2018. It would be objectively false to claim Better Now is anything less than a banger. I decided to get over myself and just enjoy some of the cracking tunes. The album did have some flaws though, and though Posty has managed to successfully cultivate a distinct sound, I was looking forward to him providing more variety on his next project.

My first thought on seeing the tracklist was actually disappointment at seeing the inclusion of Sunflower. For me this immediately signals a lack of confidence in the rest of the project. This was confirmed as I found the first half to be a very very mixed bag. Posty had lived up to my hopes of producing more variety and it’s clear he has been drawing on a really wide range of influences. The most obvious influences come from indie pop and rock, particularly in Circles. Unfortunately, Posty has combined sonic range with a huge range in quality. The hooks for me just don’t grab me particularly. For instance, ‘Enemies’ honestly feels overplayed within 2 minutes.

The second half of the project is stronger though and when Sunflower did eventually crop up, if fitted very well. After all, the song was hardly going to throw listeners off the intricate narrative arc Posty had sculpted up to this point on the album. Even with the strong ending though, I feel like this is a very inconsistent and confused effort. With his talent in being able to blend a broad range of (mostly very well-produced) sounds to support his catchy melodies, it’s clear Posty will be here for a while.
