Zach Fox

Zach is a 21 year old graduate from Durham University. He studied Music and graduated with First Class Honours in 2019. Zach has had a rich musical upbringing, starting the piano aged 5. Early in his musical life, he discovered that jazz was far more enjoyable to play and listen to, and after hearing Henry Mancini’s Pink Panther Theme, Zach was inspired to learn the saxophone, aged 8.

Although he completed his classical grades on both piano and saxophone, it was through jazz that Zach really flourished, and while attending Dulwich College he was an active member of both his school’s Big Band and Small Jazz Group. He was awarded a music scholarship aged 17.

Zach credits his appreciation of music to his parents, who favoured soul and disco CDs in the car over nursery rhymes and kids’ singalong CDs. On a musical diet of Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin, Zach’s exposure to the most legendary music at such a formative age undoubtedly positively skewed his musical preferences throughout his early life.

Pinpointing Stevie Wonder as his greatest musical influence, Zach loves to listen to a wide variety of genres, including, but by no means limited to, soul, disco, R&B, hip-hop, neo-soul, pop, and of course, jazz.

Studying music gave Zach a deep understanding of musical from an analytical perspective, which is something until he lacked University. Throughout his school years, Zach would only listen to albums in order to find the good songs within them, rather than appreciating them as full albums, and it wasn’t until University that Zach has began to appreciate the art of the album, which led him to start his record collection.

Zach finds reviewing albums incredibly satisfying, as it is not only a great way to stay switched on with new music, but it is also a great excuse to listen to and think deeply about music, both new and old.
