7 EP – Lil Nas X

This EP is the debut collection from the viral superstar rapper Lil Nas X, following the well-trodden path of attempting to convert his one-hit-wonder success into credible, long-lasting artistry. Furthermore, given that Old Town Road is now the longest running number 1 single in history (literally wtf), the task ahead for Lil Nas X seemed almost impossible.

Sadly, the task has proved to be insurmountable for Lil Nas X, as this EP is awful. Firstly, on an EP with just 8 tracks, he has included both the Remix and Original version of Old Town Road, bookending the project. A questionable move for someone attempting to display a greater body of work than one song. However, the EP showed signs of promise after a good second track, a par-level trap banger. Unfortunately, Lil Nas X could not maintain this level of consistency as track 3 is a rock song. I don’t know who or what Lil Nas X’s influences are, but for a project that is only 18 mins long to be so incoherent is actually quite impressive.

Lil Nas X is really not a good rapper, and it shows on this project. While his instrumentals are somewhat acceptable, due to the high level of exposure he has got since the success of Old Town Road, it is a shame that he brings absolutely nothing to the tracks. Even after learning that Lil Nas X supposedly opened up about his sexuality on the track ‘C7osure’, upon relistening I gained no further appreciation of him or his work.

A nothing project.
